Blink Productions

May 12th, 2011

Blink_Logos_200

Blink Productions was started over 25 years ago by producer James Studholme and animator Bob Lawrie.
Over the first 10 years of operation it evolved from an animation company into a live-action production company. Blink became well know for developing new talent and giving young directors their break into making TV commercials. This included directors such as Ivan Zacharias, Mark Denton, Dominic Murphy, Paul Gay and Steve Reeves.
By 2002 it was time for a change. The commercials business was good but Blink was struggling to maintain it’s creative momentum.
Over the next few years the Blink went through a thorough renewal. New fledgling directors such as Dougal WIlson, Lynn Fox and Pleix were brought on board and the company structure diversified with inception of new division Colonel Blimp (music videos) and Blinkink (animation). The last 5 years have seen the Blink family in it’s most creative phase to date.

04 // Fu_ky Du_ky

With the release of his fourth album, “GENERAL ECLECTICS”, on September 11th, THOMAS BRINKMANN breathes new life into his stellar side project SOUL CENTER and Berlin-based label SHITKATAPULT feels privileged to release the good work.
Don’t be mislead by the album’s title, though. Taken literally, GENERAL ECLECTICS will lead you astray not once, but twice. While the cover might allude to local noise merchants EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN’s infamous HAUS DER LÜGE sleeve and PAOLO UCCELLO’S horse’s rear, the album’s inner sleeve is covered in maps, footballs, cigarette, butts, priests … each replete with their own rich history. Take the ashtray, for example: a work of art in itself („Mein Kippenberg“) that is both light-hearted and laden with meaning.
It is Brinkmann’s sense of appropriation (the eclectic side of things), his interpretation of art/music/image/sound, that provides the red thread to connect the individual parts – and concept – of this album. Unlike SOUL CENTER’s previous works, the featured music is almost entirely devoid of samples and returns to a deep melange of techno’s richer funk and soul flavours. Seriously – this is funkier than anything we have heard in ages.
BRINKMANN sets a course with this album to the slidely tired techno circus. From the album’s slowed-down opener, “MARMELADE”, right up to the final hands-in-the-air stomper “DYR BUL SCYL”. For this album only two tracks include significant vocal usage and this time the artist underlines the background of the lyrics. ALEKSEI KRUCHENYKH (dyr bul scyl) and VLADIMIR MAJAKOVSKY (shum(ichi)) are two of the main writers of the russian futurism of the 1920s.

And we all need some more russian futurism these days.

With the release of his fourth album, “GENERAL ECLECTICS”, on September 11th THOMAS BRINKMANN breathes new life into his stellar side project SOUL CENTER. Preceded by a short and sweet preview of part one (GE 01), available on vinyl from July 2nd, the record shows the Rhine-based expressionist at his peak – and Berlin-based label SHITKATAPULT feels privileged to release the entire series!

Don’t be mislead by the album’s title, though. Taken literally, GENERAL ECLECTICS will lead you astray not once, but twice. While the cover might allude to local noise merchants EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN’s infamous HAUS DER LÜGE sleeve and PAOLO UCCELLO’S horse’s rear, the album’s inner sleeve is covered in maps, footballs, cigarette butts, priests … each replete with their own rich history. Take the ashtray, for example: a work of art in itself („Mein Kippenberg“) that

Seriously – this is funkier than anything we have heard in ages. From the album’s slowed-down opener, “MARMELADE”,
right up to the final hands-in-the-air stomper “DYR BUL SCYL” – it’s time to throw out the museum guides!

But let’s start with the 12 inches of GE 01, which reverses the track listing and kicks off with SOUL CENTER’s sure-fire floor filler. Fun is a hot gun.

Sid Le Rock – Tout Va Bien – Strike115

03 // PowWow
04 // Still Life

06 // Applebottom
07 // Walk Alone
08 // Incliner
09 // Slainte Mhor

11 // Made For You

In times of panic and uncertainty, the hip music industry continues to whine and/or regurgitates that same old templated hipster sound. Rien ne va plus? The franco-canadian and Berlin based producer Sheldon Thompson (aka PAN/TONE, GRINGO GRINDER …) could not care less and calls his new album as SID LeROCK in good humor “TOUT VA BIEN”. 11 fresh and bright tracks that never stop rocking. All his work can be described as very personal electronic music that keeps on searching for the human touch, the errors, wrong paths, trials that one can find in all creative works. The computer and electronic instruments are just alternate ways to create sound and rhythm, just like drums, guitars, bass are. SID LeROCK makes use of all these mediums and fights to stray away from the machines calculated ways of the straight track. Human error is vital.
Titles like “SWOLLEN MEMBER”, “INCLINER”, “POW WOW” are examples of a great rocking funk tune with the typical Sid tchak (snare/clap/boom!) style, combinded with classical melodic rock riffs and techno bass patterns. And best of all are the wonderful hidden jems with such vocal tracks as “STILL LIFE” and “WALK ALONE”. Classical songs, classical moods, wonderful charming singing from the bearded man. After the bankruptcy of Ladomat, SID LeROCK was without home, so he
focused his attention on his other alias, PAN/TONE and his own imprints, Cereal/Killers and Beachcoma. As Pan/Tone, he released with Kompakt, Sender, Sub-Static and completed some random productions as SID Le ROCK with remixes for Depeche Mode, Gui Boratto, Fairmont and Placibo. “TOUT VA BIEN” is the third SID LeROCK album and is released by SHITKATAPULT. It took him 4 years to return to a big SID LeROCK album, it s about time!!!!!

Official release party: Berlin – 2nd of June, SID Le ROCK – live Killekill Berghain Kantine more shows in vienna, cologne, kassel, berlin, bonn leipzig, cerceda, estonia, etc. infos at www.

Kitty-Yo

September 7th, 2010

kitty_logo_200
